Build the room, not the objects
An outdoor living space works when the pieces relate to each other. The fireplace faces the seating. The seating is far enough from the grill that the cook is part of the conversation. There is a way to walk through without crossing in front of the fire.
We lay this out on the ground with you before anything gets built, because a drawing does not tell you how a space feels to stand in.
Fire
Fire pits are the highest-value thing we build per dollar. A stacked stone pit on a paver terrace changes how often a family goes outside.
Outdoor fireplaces are a bigger commitment and a bigger presence. A true arched stone firebox is genuine masonry, not a metal insert with stone glued around it, and it will still be there in fifty years.
Either way, get the clearances and the draw right. A fireplace that smokes back at the seating area is a permanent disappointment.
Kitchens and lighting
Outdoor kitchens we build on a stacked stone base with a granite or stone top and built-in appliances, framed and finished to sit outside in Carolina humidity for decades.
Landscape lighting is the cheapest upgrade with the biggest effect. Warm, low-voltage fixtures washing a stone wall or lighting a stair path double the hours you will actually use the space, and they make good stonework look better at night than in daylight.
Common questions
Do I need a permit for an outdoor fireplace?
Sometimes, depending on size, gas connections and your jurisdiction. Tim will flag it at the estimate. Confirm with your local building department, since Greenville and Spartanburg counties differ.
Wood or gas?
Wood is the better fire and the better smell. Gas is instant and clean. Plenty of people go wood-burning with a gas starter.
Can you add lighting to hardscape you already have?
Yes. Retrofitting low-voltage lighting into an existing patio or wall is straightforward and one of the best-value improvements available.
What is a realistic budget for an outdoor kitchen?
It ranges widely with appliances and counter material. The stone structure is usually the smaller part of the cost — appliances drive the number. Tim will break it out so you can decide where to spend.
How close can a fire pit be to the house?
Follow manufacturer and local code clearances, and think about smoke drift and seating room. Tim will site it with you on the ground.
