Tim McNamara has been stacking rock since 1994

One man, three decades, and a very simple promise: the person who quotes your job is the person who builds it.

Tim The Rock Man is not a landscaping company that also does stone. It is a stone mason who also handles the landscape around it. That distinction shows up in the work.

Tim started setting stone professionally in 1994 and has been doing it in the Upstate ever since. The business runs out of Duncan, about ten minutes from Greer, and Greer is where the bulk of our best projects have been built.

Why owner-built matters

Hardscape looks simple from the road. It is not. A retaining wall lives or dies on what is behind it — the base depth, the drainage stone, the filter fabric, whether anyone bothered to find out where the water actually goes. A patio that was not graded right will look fine for one season and then start moving.

Those calls get made in the moment, on the ground, by whoever is standing there. On a Tim The Rock Man job, that is Tim. There is no crew being told to hit a square-footage number by Friday.

Upstate ground is its own problem

Our clay does not drain. It holds water, swells, and then pushes. That is what takes down walls around here — not the stone, the water behind the stone. Most of what separates a wall that lasts thirty years from one that bows in five is invisible once the job is done.

We build for the ground we actually have.

What we will tell you straight

  • If block is the right call instead of natural stone, we will say so — even though stone pays better.
  • If the job needs an engineer, we will tell you before you spend money.
  • If we are booked past when you need it, we will say that instead of stringing you along.
  • If the number is going to be higher than you were hoping, you will hear it at the estimate, not on the invoice.
Tan and brown fieldstone laid in a tight running bond — this is what thirty years of hand-fitting looks like. Part of a 1940s farmhouse restoration in Greer, using modern materials to bring back its original character. A carved stone piece cut by hand and set into the landscape — custom work most crews won't touch. We've been serving the Upstate for more than 30 years — what can we build for you?
